1908 Move to
- Los Angeles or Tulare, CA
- Historical note: This date is an estimate. Barbara Mahon (Schoenauer), William's wife, after his death moved herself, Lester and Walter to California along with her mother Catherine. Catherine moved the entire Schoenauer family from Rich Fountain Mo because of health problems. Catherine was also distraught from the death of her husband in 1897 and chose Tulare as their destination. (See Schoenauer lineage for more information.) It appears that they may have actually moved from Missouri to the Los Angeles county area first (see 1920 census below).

1920 Census of
- Paul, Barbara, Lester & Walter Hidalgo taken on Jan 6, 1920 at Antelope Township (Palmdale), Los Angeles County, California.
- Historical note: The census of 1920 clearly shows that Catherine Schoenauer, her children,
- John (son)
- Bernise K (Daughter-in-law)
- Catherine B (grandaughter)
- George L (grandson)
- Barbara (grandaughter)
- John (son)
- Were living with Paul Hidalgo, Barabara, Lester (Leslie) and Walter. This was most probably one of the section houses that workers and their families lived in when they were working on the railroad.
- Most Mahon family members recall that the Barbara actually moved to the Los Angeles area prior to Tulare and that Barabara met Pablo there. It is unclear if Catherine also moved there too. If so, it would have been later that the family migrated to Tulare. This is supported by the fact that Paul and Barbara were married in Mojave. This shows a migration from the south of the state to the north. However this is a contradiction from the the Schoenauer listing of events which states that all of the Schoenauers migrated directly to Tulare from Missouri.
- Because Catherine was with her son John in the 1920 census, she may have left Tulare to live with them at that time but this is only speculative.
- Additonal note: It should be noted that by this time Walter was known as Walter Hidalgo, not Walter Mahon. Although he was never legally adopted it was Pablo who raised him and Pablo who Walter came to know as his father. It would have been a natural that he would have taken the Hidalgo last name regardless of an adoption.
- Historical note: The census of 1920 clearly shows that Catherine Schoenauer, her children,
1922 Graduation of
- Walter Mahon (Hidalgo) from Tulare Elementary.
- Historical note: Rural elementary shools at that time included higher grades than elementary schools of today. Walter would have been 17 at the time of graduation the same as if in high school.

1954 Name change
- Hidalgo to Mahon
- Walter was known as Walter Hidalgo unitl 1954 when the family with the help of son Richard and his Aunt Vera (who worked for the Kern County Clerk) filed a declaration to have the family name changed back to Mahon. Walter (and Lester) were never legally adopted but took the Hidalgo name for obvious reasons. Since some of Walter's children were already married and had children of their own at that time all of their records were corrected as well.

1960 Injury accident to
- Walter Mahon
- Historical note: Walter had completed building a new line near Bealville, CA. On the day the line was to open Walter began his walking track inspection. A dispatcher thinking the line had been cleared allowed rail traffic on the line. As the train approached him from behind Walter was unaware that the locomotives were actually on his track. He was run over by serveral units.
- Although he should have been killed, Walter survived the accident which tore a large portion of his scalp from his head. Several of his sons were working on various portions of the railroad throughout the Southwest and California at the time and rushed to Walters side in fear that their father may not survive. Walter recovered and returned to work a short time later.
- This was the second railroad accident Walter had suffered. He had lost is left eye in the 1930's when a railroad torpedo became entagled in the brakes of his motor car and exploded when it was removed.
