Welcome to Mahon Tree!
July 24, 2007 by Carl Mahon - It has been slightly over one year since I have updated this home page. On July 23, 2007 the matriarch of the Bakersfield Mahon's, Marguerite Mary Mahon (Castro) passed away in Bakersfield, California. She was 101 years of age. Marguerite is survived by all nine of her children.
Marguerite was my grandmother with whom I have fond memories from summertime visits when I was growing up. I remember her beautiful rose gardens in Caliente, her feisty little Chihuahua "Taco" and her great homemade tortillas. She was simple yet sophisticated. When I was young, on my birthday she would send me a birthday card always addressed to 'Master Carl Mahon'. I always thought that was so cool to be addressed so formally.
I was but one of 101 grandchildren and great grandchildren that Marguerite had. I am among a group of the oldest grandchildren born in the late 1940's and early 1950's. I know that they too have their own fond memories of her because she always took the time to make each of us feel special whenever we were around her.
Summers in Bakersfield were especially memorable for me because Marguerite's youngest son Eugene (Gene) and I are only a two years apart which made for great baseball and fun.
Although it is sad whenever someone passes away, Marguerite lived a very long life and was in good health until only the last few years. We should all be so lucky. We cannot do her life full justice in just a few simple sentences here. All that can be said for now is Vaya con Dios.
July 1, 2006 by Carl Mahon - The Mahon Tree Dot Com takes its first breath. This site was created by Carl and his son Ryan Mahon. It is dedicated to preserving the family history of the Mahon clan from Kern County and Bakersfield, California. This site will continue to grow as those who desire, add to the rich heritage that we have. Like Disneyland it will never be completed.
First, let's give credit where credit is due to the reason this site was born on this day. That credit goes to Nola Mahon, wife of Jim Mahon for her endless hours of research. Her passion was born of a simple request from Jim to find out where his Grandfather was buried. Considering the nature of his brief life that was not a simple task.
Once the information she had gathered began to reach me the fires really started burning and a wealth of information began to appear from our joint efforts. But Nola has paved the way (and is still paving). She deserves our deepest appreciation. As information is gathered and validated we will be entering it on this site. It is truly going to be a great story.
Who are the Mahon's of Bakersfield? They are the family that help build the railroads for the Southern Pacfic starting in the 1920's with Walter Mahon and with his sons all through the 50's, 60's and 70's to the new millenium. They were the brothers that started as spike drivers and became the most respected management the railroad ever had.
Of course the Mahon clan was not just the men but the women as well. All of them raising children, having jobs of their own, some putting up with the railroad life. Yes, this is a story of boxcars as homes and sand and sagebrush for a front yard. All this will be told throughout this site, I'm sure some of the best stories ever told.
Please remember that this site will change as new and corrected information is found. If there is an error please email it to webmaster@mahontree.com so that we are as accurate as possible.
